I have taught ELL students in all of my classes, so I am very familiar with incorporating ELL strategies in everyday learning. However, I specifically taught English as Second Language during the EXPLORE summer camp. It is affiliated with a CEGEP in Quebec and learning goals include:
-
Listening: Ability to understand and summarize a 3-minute audio message;
-
Speaking: Ability to speak for 3 minutes on a topic of general interest, ability to ask questions in an interactive situation, ability to use a functional level of pronunciation and intonation;
-
Reading: Ability to understand the basic meaning of a general interest text of approximately 750 words; and
-
Writing: Ability to compose a clear and understandable 200 word text using present or simple past tense.
This was a summer course that had an experiential focus, so all teachers avoided regular seat work. My co-teacher and I divided the course into themes that included Photography, All About Me, Sports, Music, Travel, Food, and Pop Culture. We regularly incoporated lots of games, skits, videos, presentations, and competitions to keep students engaged.
